How to Make your Own Face Mask at Home

To travel on public transport, from 15th June, everyone is going to be required to wear a face covering so we want to share with you the pattern that Nailsworth Scrub Hub have been working with to make masks. This is based on a pleated design available online but the team of volunteers have been refining the design in response to end user feedback. Download the guide sheet here (it’s a pdf):

MAKE YOUR OWN PLEATED MASK – INSTRUCTIONS TO PRINT

This is a really simple guide to making your own face mask at home.

We recommend you add a metal nose bridge, inserted in a narrow pocket (you could cut a piece of aluminium from a foil food tray and fold it twice into a 1.5cm flat bridge is best, or use a pipe cleaner or a piece of folded garden wire) We made it removable so the mask can be washed easily.

This is made from a double layer of light poly-cotton fabric with a pocket to insert a filter (coffee filter paper, kitchen roll, vacuum cleaner HEPA liner).

You will need to insert elastic through the end pockets (round cord elastic is most comfortable) to either go over your ears or over your head. An option is to thread ties through the end pockets to tie at the back of your head. We tend to use looped elastic for ears that can be worn over the ears or hooked at the back of your head on an ‘ear saver’.
